Observability in industrial settings is fundamentally different from cloud-native environments. You cannot simply throw Prometheus + Grafana at a plant and expect useful results.

What “Good” Looks Like

Operators and engineers should be able to answer three questions within 30 seconds: Is the line running? What is abnormal right now? What changed in the last hour?

We achieve this by building layered dashboards that start extremely simple and only expose deeper telemetry when the operator drills down. Every alert must have a clear owner and a documented remediation path.

Key Technical Decisions

• Separate “plant operations” metrics from “IT infrastructure” metrics
• Use time-series databases that handle high-cardinality industrial tags gracefully
• Implement clear escalation paths from operator screens to engineering teams
• Correlate IT events (network switch reboot) with OT events (PLC comms loss)
