Ethernet vs Fieldbus: When Industrial Ethernet Wins and When It Doesn't
The shift from fieldbus (PROFIBUS, DeviceNet, CANopen, AS-Interface) to industrial Ethernet (PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT, Modbus TCP) has been underway for two decades. Yet fieldbus networks still run billions of devices, and replacing them is not always the right move.
What Industrial Ethernet Brings
- One cabling infrastructure for control, I/O, and business data - if segmented properly.
- Higher bandwidth and faster cycle times (EtherCAT and PROFINET IRT can serve motion applications).
- Standard diagnostics: switches, packet analysis, and IT-style troubleshooting tools.
- Easier integration with modern engineering and data acquisition.
When Fieldbus Still Makes Sense
- The installed base is healthy and spares are available; replacement cost is the whole project cost.
- Very short, very deterministic applications where a mature serial bus already meets requirements.
- Legacy equipment with no Ethernet option - adding gateways is often cheaper than replacing instruments.
Engineering Guidance
Treat network choice as part of the machine lifecycle, not a one-time spec. When controllers and I/O are being renewed anyway, standardize on one industrial Ethernet protocol per site to keep spares and skills simple. When only a few field devices need refreshing, a protocol gateway that maps the old bus onto Ethernet buys time at a fraction of the cost of a full migration.
Whatever you choose, the security boundary does not change: industrial Ethernet must still be segmented from the office network, and fieldbus segments that can be reached remotely need the same protection as any other control traffic.
